Paul J. Hynes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, surrounded by family, at the age of 89. A lifelong resident of Boston, Paul was known for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his loved ones. His presence touched everyone who knew him, and his legacy of kindness will endure in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to call him family or friend.
Born in Somerville on August 29, 1935, Paul was deeply proud of his Boston roots and strong Irish heritage. Throughout his life, he lived with selflessness, placing family and friends at the center of everything he did. Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained as a paratrooper at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he earned his parachutist badge and Good Conduct Medal. As a squad leader, his dedication and strength were evident, reflecting his commitment to serving his country. After completing his military service, Paul worked for over 30 years with the MBTA.
Above all, Paul’s greatest devotion was to his family. He was a constant presence in the lives of his children and grandchildren, imparting to them the values of hard work, family, and living life with joy. His wisdom, humor, and caring nature left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Paul is predeceased by his son, Kevin Hynes, his parents John and Mary Hynes, and siblings, Lorraine Murphy and Kenneth Hynes. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marie, and his children, Stephen and Barbara Hynes of Norton, MA, and Michael and Liz Hynes of Arlington, TX. He was the proud grandfather of Jacquelyn Copeland and her husband, Chris, as well as Stevie, John Paul, and Michael Hynes. He is also remembered fondly by his extended family, including Brian and Nancy Murphy of Milton, MA, and many dear friends.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16th, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Carroll-Thomas Funeral Home, 22 Oak Street, Hyde Park. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Most Precious Blood Church in Hyde Park on Friday morning at 10:30 AM, followed by interment at Knollwood Memorial Park Canton, MA.
