Martineau "Matou" Candio, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully at his home in Hyde Park, MA, on July 6, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on April 13, 1940, in the serene town of Anse D'Hainault, Haiti, Matou's life was a testament to his unwavering devotion to his family, his students, and his faith.
Matou's journey led him to the loving arms of Lamise Joseph, and they were united in marriage in 1967. Together, they nurtured a family grounded in love and spirituality. A dedicated father, he instilled values of kindness and service in his children, Naptivita, Norguette, Lourdy, Murlhouse, Sister Mirtyse, and Ralph. His role extended to being a father-in-law to Belanoit, Antoine, Jean Felix, Samenta, and Pierre Marcelin, all of whom he cherished deeply.
The joys of grandfatherhood were bestowed upon Matou, as he embraced each moment with Jonathan, Felix Martin, Kimberlie, Rubens, Valandy, Christy, Matthew, Joseph Luc, Herby, Samuel, and Samirah Grace. His presence in their lives was a source of endless love and wisdom. As a brother to Silima, Dieuseul, and Marita, Matou shared a bond that was both nurturing and supportive. His numerous nieces and nephews, including Marcsan, Conceptia, Jackson, Keda, Damors, Romelle, Lorita, Sister Bethite, Carline, Asna, Oscar, and Modesta, all held a special place in his heart.
Before moving to the United States in 2009, Matou's vocation as an Elementary School Teacher in Haiti touched the lives of countless students across various schools. His commitment to education was matched only by his dedication to his ministry. Serving as a Minister for Chapels in Bourdon, Embouchure, and Lilette, he guided his community with a gentle and steadfast hand, embodying the essence of spiritual leadership.
Matou's faith was the cornerstone of his existence. A proud Catholic, his life was an embodiment of his beliefs, always seeking to serve God and exude the grace he found in his religion. Outside the classroom and the chapel, Matou found joy in the simpler pleasures of life. Whether it was playing cards and dominoes, watching his favorite game shows and sports, or dancing with his beloved Lamise, his laughter and spirit were infectious.
His love for the beach was more than just a pastime; it was an opportunity to create lasting memories with his family, basking in the serenity of the ocean's embrace. Matou's life was a dance of joy and devotion, and his legacy is etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
Martineau "Matou" Candio's departure from this earth is felt by many, but his memory will continue to inspire and guide us. He was the embodiment of a loving, kind, and faith-filled soul, and the impact of his life's work and love will resonate for generations. As we bid farewell to Matou, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared and the lessons he imparted. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love that he so freely gave.
