James A. Macdonald, known affectionately as "Jimmy" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 9, 1935, in Charlestown, Massachusetts, Jimmy was a man whose life was characterized by devotion to his family, service to his country, and a deep-seated love for his community.
Jimmy's early years were spent in the close-knit neighborhoods of Charlestown, where he attended Cathedral High School. After graduation, his sense of duty led him to serve in the U.S. Army with the Military Police from 1955 to 1957, an experience that would shape his values and work ethic. Upon being honorably discharged, Jimmy furthered his education by earning an associate degree from Newbury Junior College – a testament to his belief in the power of lifelong learning.
In 1960, Jimmy married the love of his life, Elizabeth Gillen, fondly known as "Betty." Their union was a cherished one, lasting 41 years until her passing in 2001. Together, they raised five wonderful children and created a warm, loving home in Hyde Park. Jimmy's role as a father was one he treasured, and he instilled in his children the importance of family, hard work, and enjoying life's simple pleasures.
Professionally, Jimmy dedicated over 40 years of service to Boston Edison as a Meter Reader. His commitment to his work was matched only by his commitment to his family. He was a loving father to David Macdonald and his wife, Natalia, Brian Macdonald and his wife, Mary, Bonnie Dobie and her husband, Paul, Lauren Peckham and her husband, John, and Kristen Maalouf and her husband, Wadih. He was also a cherished brother to Claire Klier and predeceased by his siblings Andrew Macdonald, Carol Sullivan, and David Macdonald.
Jimmy's joy was multiplied as he became "Papa" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He took immense pride in being a grandfather to Brian and Michael Macdonald, Shawn and Matthew Peckham, Michael Dobie, and Anthony and Mia Maalouf, and a great-grandfather to Colby, Emilia, and Charlotte. His presence was a constant at their hockey and baseball games, recitals, and significant events, offering unwavering support and love.
In his personal life, Jimmy was a man of many interests and talents. His beautifully landscaped yard was a point of pride and a symbol of his dedication to creating beauty in his corner of the world. His love for sports was lifelong, playing handball at the L Street Bathhouse in South Boston until he was 81, and he was an avid fan of all Boston sports teams, especially the Boston Bruins. Jimmy's passion for life extended to travel, with memorable trips to England, Prince Edward Island, Aruba, Bermuda, Ireland and many other destinations.
Those who knew Jimmy will remember him as a loving, kind, and friendly man. He was the rock of his family, a steadfast friend, and a proud veteran. His absence will be deeply felt, but his legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we bid farewell to Jimmy, we celebrate a life well-lived, a family well-loved, and a man who was truly the best of us. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely. Jimmy Macdonald was a remarkable man who will be missed dearly, but never forgotten.
