Antonette M. "Annie" (Paola) Hanley, aged 100, of Gloucester, formerly of Hyde Park, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on September 9, 2024. Born in Boston, MA, on June 19, 1924, she was the daughter of the late John and Maria Paola and grew into the matriarch of a vibrant, expansive Italian family that cherished her warmth and unwavering love.
Annie was the beloved wife of the late Lester T. Hanley, who passed away in 1991, and Leo F. Keegan, who passed in 1949. She devoted her life to her family and is survived by her adoring children, John R. Keegan and his wife Lisa of Abington, and Marion (Keegan) Athanas of Gloucester. Annie also held a special place in her heart for her late son, Michael L. Keegan. She was a cherished sister to Jeanne Rossi of Hyde Park, Anna Davidson of Brookline, and predeceased by her siblings Salvatore, Sebastian, Johnny, Joseph, Agnes Coleman, Mae Spadaro, and Vincent.
Known affectionately as "Nannie," Annie's joy was multiplied through her 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Her legacy extends through numerous loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends who were all touched by her kindness and generosity.
Annie's life was characterized by her unwavering commitment to her family. She loved the traditional Sunday Family dinners, a tradition steeped in the Italian culture of her heritage that brought together grandparents, aunts, uncles, and countless family members weekly. Annie's maternal nature extended to her work, where she poured her energy and love into caring for her family. Annie knew the value of celebration and was known for her jubilant parties and her love of playing cards with friends.
Her kind and pleasant demeanor endeared her to all those who knew her. Her children hold such wonderful memories of walking up to Carson Beach to spend the day when they were young, a testament to her appreciation for life's simple joys before the advent of modern conveniences of automobiles.
She held a deep love for the New England coast, spending every weekend during the summer months with her children at the beaches in Gloucester, picnicking and cherishing family time watching her children play in the tidepools and swim in the waters. Annie's personal joys were found in the simple pleasures of life. She relished time spent at Houghton's Pond where she would take her children on hot summer evenings for a cookout and to swim in the cool water. She was a beacon of love and life, embracing every moment with enthusiasm despite experiencing the profound loss of her two husbands and her beloved son Michael.
Her boundless love extended to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with whom she spent as much time as possible imparting wisdom and creating unforgettable memories, and recently enjoying time with her great-great-grandchildren. Annie's connection with her sisters was one of mutual adoration and love, and they spent countless hours in each other's company laughing and enjoying life together.
Annie will forever be remembered as a woman who embodied love, kindness, and friendliness. Her ability to connect with people and her genuine interest in their well-being left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her warm smile and gentle nature were a comfort to all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
As we bid farewell to Annie, we remember a life rich in love, family, and cherished moments. Her legacy of warmth, unwavering support, and the countless memories she created with all who knew her, will continue to inspire and guide us. Antonette M. "Annie" (Paola) Hanley will be deeply missed, and her spirit will live on through the generations she lovingly nurtured.
